Privacy Policy

Last updated 8 September 2026

This policy applies to the CubeCoach app (“the app”). CubeCoach is operated by Nilsen Lab (“we,” “us”). It is short because CubeCoach is built to keep your data on your device. You can reach us any time at lukas@nilsenlab.com.

The short version

No accounts. No ads. No advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking. Cube scanning and practice run on your device. Camera pictures and practice progress are never uploaded. The only thing the app sends over the internet is a routine check for app updates, described below.

Camera

CubeCoach uses your camera to read the colors on your Rubik’s Cube. While you scan, the app takes pictures and reads the sticker colors on your device. Each picture is written to the app’s private cache while it is being read, and the app deletes it as soon as reading is done. If the app is interrupted or a deletion fails, a picture can remain in that private cache until iOS clears it or you delete the app. Pictures are never saved to your photo library and never sent anywhere.

CubeCoach only uses the camera while you are on a scanning screen and have granted camera permission. You can turn that permission off at any time in the iOS Settings app. The case library and practice work without it.

Data stored on your device

Your practice history (which cases you have learned, your review schedule and your settings) is saved locally on your device only. We never receive a copy. Deleting the app, or using Delete local data inside the app, erases it.

App updates and diagnostics

CubeCoach can download small over-the-air updates so we can ship fixes without a full App Store release. When the app checks for an update, it sends a request to our update service, which is hosted by Expo. That request includes technical details needed to pick the right update: your device’s operating system and its version, the app version and release you have installed, and a random installation token that the app creates once on your device. The token is not an advertising identifier and is not tied to your name, email or any account, because CubeCoach has none.

If the app fails to start after an update, the next update check can include a short description of that error so the service can help the app recover. This is the only diagnostic information the app sends. CubeCoach does not use an analytics or crash-reporting service beyond this, and it does not record how you scan or practice.

As with any internet request, the update service sees the network address the request comes from while it is being handled. Expo describes how it treats update requests in its own privacy policy.

What we do not collect
